"And that’s where our story begins because, frankly, nobody could care less about a walkway… In 1907, the Russell Building was completed and work was begun on the tunnel connecting it to the senate. The following year, the government ordered two custom-built people-haulers from the Studebaker Brothers Manufacturing Company. This was a wise move because Studebaker, the only carriage company to successfully transfer to automobile manufacturing, were the biggest proponents of electric car manufacturing of their era. Since the “underground railroad,” as the route would become known, was indoors, electric was the only way to safely propel a vehicle. John Studebaker called gasoline-based cars, “clumsy, noisy, dangerous brutes (that) stink to high heaven, break down at the worst possible moment and are a public nuisance” (which they were back then)."

{"But the stations along the line, which connects downtown Vancouver to Richmond and the airport, were only built to handle two-car trains, meaning TransLink has two expensive options: dig out and expand the platforms, or add more frequent service.
TransLink CEO Kevin Desmond says that in the short term, adding more cars is just about all they can do.
“It’s a little bit of a challenge, ultimately, how much throughput we can get on the Canada Line,” Desmond said at a recent Surrey Board of Trade luncheon.

“At least in the near term, in the next 10, 15 years, we think just adding cars” will curb demand to an extent, he added."}

The platform at each Metrorail station is long enough to accommodate six-car-long trains; the Dadeland North, Earlington Heights, and Government Center station platforms are long enough to accommodate eight-car-long trains. In-service trains are usually either four or six cars long; in the evening it is not uncommon for Miami-Dade Transit to link two out-of-service trains together before returning them to Lehman Yard.
